DOCUMENTS CHECKLIST FOR MALTA STUDENT VISA

Malta Student Visa Process

EU Nationals

Students from the EU can apply for a student visa through the same process they would a travel or a work visa. Visas are not needed for stays inferior to three months.

Non-EU Nationals

Non-EU nationals need to apply for a visa regardless of the length of time spent in Malta. Contact your embassy for more information. Non-EU students should apply for a Schengen visa as this allows them more freedom of travel in the member states.

Application for student visas

Student visas are required for all students travelling to study in or visit Malta. Some nationalities (including EU nationals) only need a student visa for stays of more than three months.

When applying for a student visa, you should provide all the necessary information and documents as the Maltese Embassy will not consider half complete applications. The following list provides you with all the necessary documentation that you will need:

  1. Your completed application form
  2. Your up-to-date and valid passport/travel document.
  3. Two identical colour passport photos that must be from the last six months and adhere to the Embassy’s photographic requirements.
  4. Student Status Letter from your university faculty.
  5. Proof of travel insurance to cover the duration of your visit. The insurance company will provide you with a certificate to include in your application
  6. Proof of travel plans (flight, ferry or train bookings). The Maltese Embassy insists that you must have pre-booked your travel before you apply for your visa.
  7. Proof of accommodation
  8. Proof of financial means. You should have approximately €30 per day available. Bank statements, wage slips from the last 3 months or travellers cheques with the relevant amounts are necessary to prove you meet the financial requirements.
  9. Schengen visas require an application fee. This charge can vary, so it is best to check with the Maltese Embassy to confirm the actual amount and the method of payment. This can be done through the Embassy website.
  10. self addressed special delivery envelope to allow the Embassy to post back your passport/documents when a decision has been made.
  11. Photocopies of all the documents provided (you need to send both originals and photocopies).

Common Documents Required for getting a Malta Schengen Visa

The following is a list of common documents required for a short-term Malta Schengen visa:

  • A filled and signed visa application form.
  • Two recent passport-sized photos taken in the last three months must be attached to the visa application form.
  • A passport that should not be more than 10 years old, and should have a validity of at least three more months than the duration for which you intend to stay in Malta.
  • You will have to attach proofs of your round-trip tickets, hotel reservations, and your tour itinerary in Malta.
  • You must produce your travel insurance policy, which has a coverage of at least 30,000 euros for medical emergencies, such as diseases, accidents, or repatriation in case of death. Getting this travel insurance from Bharti Axa would be ideal as it would cover all the possible contingencies.
  • You will also have to submit the proof of your accommodation during your visit to Malta. It can be a hotel or a hostel booking, a rental agreement, a letter of invitation from a friend or family member who is inviting you, etc.
  • You will also have to submit the proof of your financial means showing that you will be able to support yourself financially during your stay in Malta. This can be your bank statement for the last three months, or the bank statement of your sponsor, also spanning the last three months.
  • Proof that you have paid the visa fee, which is 60 euros for adults and 35 euros for children between 6 to 12 years of age.
